Pawsitively Cool: Beat the Heat with These Tips to Keep Your Dogs Safe and Happy in Hot Weather!

Dogs being walked in the early morning sun

As the temperature rises and the sun shines brighter, it's important to remember that our furry friends need extra care during hot weather. Dogs are prone to heat exhaustion and heatstroke, but with a few precautions, you can ensure they stay cool, comfortable, and happy all summer long. In this blog post, we'll share valuable tips on how to keep your dogs cool in hot weather, allowing them to enjoy the season while staying safe.

1. Hydration is Key:

Just like humans, dogs need plenty of fresh, cool water to stay hydrated. Make sure your pup always has access to clean water, both indoors and outdoors. Consider investing in a pet fountain or multiple water bowls strategically placed around your home and yard. When you're out and about, carry a collapsible water bowl and offer water breaks during walks or trips to the park.

2. Create a Shady Haven:

Provide your dog with ample shade, both indoors and outdoors. Limit their exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest parts of the day. Set up a cozy, well-ventilated area indoors where your furry friend can retreat to when they need a break from the heat. Outdoors, create shady spots using umbrellas, canopies, or even a designated doggy gazebo to protect them from the scorching sun.

3. Never Leave Dogs in Cars:

We cannot stress this enough—never leave your dog unattended in a car, even for a few minutes. The temperature inside a parked car can skyrocket within minutes, leading to fatal consequences. If you need to run errands or go somewhere that isn't dog-friendly, it's best to leave your furry friend at home, where they'll be safe and comfortable.

4. Cooling Accessories and Treats:

Help your dog beat the heat with some fun and practical accessories. Wet towels, cooling mats, or elevated beds can provide relief on hot days. You can also freeze dog-safe treats or toys to create a refreshing and entertaining experience. A splash in a kiddie pool or a gentle mist from a hose can also provide much-needed relief on especially hot days.

5. Adjust Exercise and Walking Times:

During scorching temperatures, it's essential to adjust your dog's exercise routine. Schedule walks during the cooler parts of the day, such as early mornings or late evenings, when the temperature drops. Be mindful of hot pavement, as it can burn your dog's paws. If it's too hot outside, engage your pup in indoor games or mental stimulation activities to keep them entertained.

6. Watch for Signs of Heat Stress:

Knowing the signs of heat stress in dogs is crucial for their well-being. Watch out for excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, glazed eyes, vomiting, or stumbling. If you notice any of these symptoms, take immediate action to cool your dog down by providing water, wetting their paws, and seeking veterinary help if necessary.

As responsible dog owners, it's our duty to keep our beloved pets safe and comfortable during hot weather. By following these tips, you can ensure your furry companion stays cool, hydrated, and happy throughout the summer season. Remember, prevention is key when it comes to heat-related issues, so prioritize their well-being and enjoy the summer together with your pawsitively cool pup!

You can still book your photoshoot package with me during the hot weather, but please be assured no shoots will take place until the temperate is cool enough. During summer months, most shoots are done during the evening when temperatures have dropped, but if it's still 21c or more, we will reschedule to a cooler time. My priority is keeping your dog safe, happy and relaxed while we carry out their photoshoot.
